Description

Andre Pierre : Born on July 29, 1914 in Port-Au-Prince, Andre moved to Anse-A-Veau to live with his aunt after the death of his parents. A few years later he moved back to Port-Au-Prince where he divided his time between agriculture and Voodoo. In 1930 he settled in Croix Des Missions and became a Voodoo priest. Around 1949 he joined the Centre d’Art encouraged by a young american writer, Maya Deren. It took him nearly 10 years to decide to devote himself entirely to painting. A primitive self-taught painter, Andre Pierre is said to be the “spiritual heir” of the Great Hector Hyppolite. He quickly became one of the most famous primitive Haitian Painters. His paintings are treasured by collectors worldwide.

Primitivism is a Western art movement that borrows visual forms from non-Western or prehistoric peoples, such as Paul Gauguin’s inclusion of Tahitian motifs in paintings and ceramics. Borrowings from primitive art has been important to the development of modern art
