Fritz Merise was born on August 27, 1946 in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. He discovered his passion for art at an early age and in fact he taught himself how to paint until he did his first complete painting while in high school. Fritz mainly painted animals, landscapes, and jungles. Most of his work was done using bright and vivid colors. He used acrylic on canvas for his painting.

Merise’s work was full of creativity, humor and imagery because he gave animals the character of human beings which were exaggerated. An example of his painting is Poker night which was painted in 2006. It shows animals seated down playing poker, wearing black and brown shoes and different colored socks. They have a fan which rotates as they play poker and have fun in drinking and smoking.

The animals in this painting behave like human beings but what makes it humorous is the presence of a fan in the night. Nights are usually colder than days. The artist wanted to bring out the irony of using a fan in the night.

Fritz Merise works are found in exhibitions in U.S, Caribbean, Japan and Europe
