Description
Joseph Jacob (b. March 19, 1924, Port-au-Prince, Haiti) — Originally trained as a contractor and educator, Jacob’s early work teaching technical drawing at a government central school in Port-au-Prince awakened a deeper calling to fine art. He formally joined the Centre d’Art, a legendary hub for Haitian creativity, then went on to co-found the Foyer des Arts Plastiques alongside a new generation of Haitian artists.
In 1957 he moved to the United States, where he continued honing his art. Upon returning to Haiti in 1963, he and friends established Coin d’Art Gallery in Port-au-Prince — helping foster a local art community and expand the reach of Haitian painting.
Jacob is best known for his distinctive pointillist / dot-technique paintings, rich in texture, emotion, and human depth. His works often depict mothers, children, figures in everyday life — sometimes suffused with a quietly sorrowful or contemplative mood. Though once exhibited internationally, Jacobs’s paintings are now increasingly rare and highly coveted by collectors of Haitian art and naïve/folk-style painting.
