Description

Raoul Viard , a self-taught Haitian artist born in 1923, distinguished himself as a significant figure in the realm of Haitian art. While some critics classify his prolific and widely-recognized work as “typical Haitian painting,” a closer examination reveals the artistry of an exceptional Impressionist master. His oeuvre, particularly his seascapes, stands out for its striking use of vibrant colors applied with a spatula and heavy impasto, creating a distinctive texture and evocative mood.

Viard’s dedication to his craft was evident from a young age, as he honed his skills through diligent work and by immersing himself in art books. This independent pursuit of knowledge shaped his unique artistic vision, allowing him to capture the essence of Haitian landscapes and seascapes with rich textures and dazzling hues, primarily in warm ochres and reds.

His talent did not go unnoticed. Viard’s work garnered recognition both within Haiti and internationally. Notably, the Haitian government selected his art to be featured at the inauguration of the World Health Organization in Washington, D.C., a testament to the cultural significance of his work. His pieces are also held in numerous private collections worldwide, further solidifying his position as a respected artist. Art critic and author Gérald Alexis, in his book “Peintres Haitiens,” lauded Viard’s ability to create a vast body of landscape paintings, showcasing his skill and dedication.

Raoul Viard’s legacy endures through his captivating paintings, many of which can be found in reference books such as John Allen Franciscus’ “Haiti Voodoo Kingdom To Modern Riviera” and Eleanor Ingalls Christensen’s “The Art of Haiti”. Though he passed away in 1991, his contributions to the world of art, particularly as a master of Impressionism within the Haitian context, continue to inspire and resonate with art enthusiasts and collectors alike.
