Description
Seymour Etienne Bottex (1922–2016) was one of Haiti’s most accomplished and collectible painters of the 20th century, associated with the renowned Cap-Haïtien school of naïve art.
Born in Port-Margot in northern Haiti, Bottex initially worked as a photographer before turning to painting in 1955, encouraged by his older brother, the artist Jean-Baptiste Bottex. He joined the Centre d’Art in Port-au-Prince in 1961 and later worked with the influential Galerie Issa, which helped launch many of Haiti’s leading artists.
Bottex is celebrated for his richly detailed compositions depicting market scenes, daily life, biblical narratives, and historical subjects, all rendered in bold colors and animated figures. His work embodies the storytelling tradition of Haitian art and reflects the vibrancy of Caribbean culture.
Throughout his career, his paintings were exhibited internationally, including in the United States and Europe, and his works have appeared at major auction houses such as Sotheby’s.
Today, Seymour Etienne Bottex is regarded as one of the leading figures of Haitian naïve painting, with works held in important private collections and institutions worldwide.
